The tradition reads the Navamsa as the finer view of a planet's real strength, and as the chart of marriage and dharma. It is the first divisional chart astrologers consult after the main chart.

Take each planet's sidereal longitude from the main chart.
Divide its sign into nine equal slices (one per ).
The slice number plus the sign's element decides the Navamsa sign: fire signs start counting from Aries, earth from Capricorn, air from Libra and water from Cancer.
