About Astavya
What is Astavya?
Astavya is a Vedic astrology companion for Nepal and the diaspora: a birth chart (kundali) with 45 calculators, the daily Panchang and Bikram Sambat calendar, muhurat timings, horoscopes, learning material and verified astrologers. Every number comes from an astronomy engine, and every result shows how it was worked out.
Is astrology scientifically proven?
No. The planetary positions we calculate are real astronomy and are checked against NASA JPL data, but the meanings given to them are tradition, not established science. We label which is which, and nothing here replaces medical, legal, financial or psychological advice.
Is it free?
All calculators, the Panchang, Muhurat finder, horoscopes and learning pages are free to use without an account. An account lets you save profiles, keep a personal calendar and ask the AI astrologer a few free questions each day; reports and consultations are paid.
Birth chart
Why does my birth time matter so much?
The rising sign (lagna) changes about every two hours and the Moon moves about 13° a day, so houses, divisional charts and dashas depend on the exact time. If you don't know it, choose 'unknown' and we will only show what can be supported without it.
Which ayanamsa and house system do you use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa and whole-sign houses by default, as most Nepali and Indian astrologers do. You can switch to Raman, Krishnamurti or Fagan-Bradley, and to equal, Sripati or Porphyry houses, in Settings.
What are divisional charts (D9, D10…)?
Each divisional chart (varga) splits every sign into smaller parts and is read for one area of life: the Navamsa (D9) for marriage and inner strength, the Dasamsa (D10) for career, and so on up to D60. They need an accurate birth time. Your dashboard shows them for your own profile.
Panchang & daily timings
What is Rahu Kaal and how is it calculated?
The daytime from sunrise to sunset is split into eight equal parts; one part, fixed by the weekday, is Rahu Kaal (for example the 8th part on Sunday, the 2nd on Monday). Tradition avoids starting new work in it. Because it depends on local sunrise and sunset, it changes with your city and the season.
What is Abhijit Muhurat?
The day is divided into fifteen muhurtas; the eighth, around local noon, is Abhijit. Tradition treats it as broadly auspicious when no other muhurat is available, though many schools do not use it on Wednesdays.
What are Choghadiya and Hora?
Choghadiya splits the day and the night into eight parts each, named Amrit, Shubh, Labh (good), Chal (neutral) and Udveg, Kaal, Rog (to avoid), in an order set by the weekday. Hora splits the day and night into twelve 'planetary hours' each, ruled in the Chaldean order starting with the weekday's lord.
What is Bhadra and why is it avoided?
Bhadra is the Vishti karana, a half-tithi that comes about eight times a lunar month. Tradition says Bhadra 'resides' on earth, in heaven or in the underworld depending on the Moon's sign, and avoids auspicious work only while it is on earth (Moon in Cancer, Leo, Aquarius or Pisces). We show where it resides.
What are Chandra Bala and Tara Bala?
Both are personal. Chandra Bala counts the day's Moon sign from your birth Moon sign; the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th are favourable. Tara Bala counts the day's nakshatra from your birth nakshatra, folded into nine 'taras'. Add your profile on the dashboard or in the Muhurat finder to see them.
Muhurat
How does the Muhurat finder choose dates?
For each day it checks the weekday, tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana against the traditional rules for the purpose, removes Rikta tithis, Amavasya, harsh yogas, Bhadra, Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda, and for weddings and moves also Kharmas and a combust Jupiter or Venus. Windows of at least one muhurta (48 minutes) are kept and scored.
Can I rely on it instead of a priest?
Use it to shortlist dates. It does not check the rising sign of the exact moment, Chaturmas or your family's customs, and it lists what it did not check. Confirm the final muhurat with a priest or astrologer who knows your tradition.
Matching & compatibility
How does kundali matching (guna milan) work?
The Ashtakoota system compares the two Moon nakshatras and signs across eight factors worth 36 points in all (Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi). Tradition considers 18 or more acceptable. We also show Nadi dosha with its traditional cancellations and Manglik status for each person.
Should a low score stop a marriage?
No calculation can decide a relationship. A score is a traditional talking point; many astrologers read the whole of both charts, and couples weigh values, communication and family far more. Treat it as one input, never the decision.
Horoscope
Is the horoscope for my Sun sign or Moon sign?
Your Moon sign (rashi), as is usual in Vedic astrology. Daily, weekly, monthly and yearly readings are written from where the planets are in that period, counted from each Moon sign. If you don't know your Moon sign, the Moon Sign calculator finds it from your birth date.
Numerology
What is Vedic numerology (Anka Shastra)?
It links the numbers 1 to 9 with the nine grahas (1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars). Your Moolank comes from the day of birth, your Bhagyank from the full date and your Namank from the letters of your name (Chaldean values).
Account & privacy
What happens to my birth details?
Without an account nothing you enter is stored. With an account, profiles are encrypted, visible only to you and people you share them with, and you can export or delete everything from Settings. We never sell personal data.
My town isn't in the list. What can I do?
Use 'Search another place': the search covers tens of thousands of towns, including smaller places in Nepal and India. If yours is still missing, pick the nearest town; a few kilometres changes sunrise by only seconds.
