Understand this calculator

What it does

Finds your rising sign, the : the sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born, with its degree, nakshatra and ruling planet.

Why it matters

The lagna sets the houses of your chart and is read as the 'self': body, temperament and how you meet the world. It is the most time-sensitive point in a chart.

How it is worked out

  1. Your birth moment is turned into local sidereal time, the angle of the sky's rotation at your longitude.
  2. With your latitude and the tilt of Earth's axis, the engine finds the point where the ecliptic crosses the eastern horizon.
  3. The is subtracted and the sign, degree and nakshatra are read off.

How to read your result

  • Sign and degree: a sign rises for roughly two hours, so the degree tells you how early or late in that window you were born.
  • Ruling planet: the 'lord of the lagna', whose placement the tradition studies closely.
  • Stability: if a few minutes' uncertainty would change the sign or nakshatra, the tool flags it.

What it cannot tell you

Needs a reasonably exact birth time and place. A time off by 4 minutes moves the lagna about one degree; a time off by two hours can change the sign.
