About this festival
Holi is linked to the story of Prahlad and Holika, the triumph of devotion over arrogance. In Kathmandu a bamboo pole (chir) is raised at Basantapur a week before to start the festival. People throw coloured powder and water.
How it is observed: Colours are traditionally made from flowers and herbs; today, choose skin-safe colours.
How the date is decided
The Purnima of Phalguna. In the Terai it is celebrated the day after the hills.
