Understand this calculator

What it does

Draws your whole : where each of the nine grahas stood in the sidereal zodiac, which house each one occupies, and the details of every planet (nakshatra, pada, strength by sign, retrograde, combust).

Why it matters

Almost every other tool is a close-up of something already in this chart. If you are new, start here: it is the map the rest of the tradition reads.

How it is worked out

  1. Your local birth time and place are converted to universal time (UTC), because astronomy is calculated in UTC.
  2. Each planet's apparent position is computed with an astronomy library and checked against NASA JPL reference positions.
  3. The (Lahiri by default) is subtracted to move to the .
  4. The is the zodiac point rising on the eastern horizon; whole-sign count from it. Other house methods are available in settings.
  5. Astavya tags each planet with its , and status using documented rules.

How to read your result

  • The diamond (North Indian) or square (South Indian) chart: tap a planet or house to see a personal explanation of what it means and how it was derived.
  • The planet table lists exact degrees. Planets within about a degree of a sign edge are sensitive to a small time error.
  • The 'rules used' and 'calculation signature' at the bottom let you or another astrologer reproduce the result exactly.

What it cannot tell you

Without a birth time the lagna and houses cannot be known, and the Moon may fall in two signs; the tool says so and withholds what it cannot support. A chart is a picture of the sky, not a prediction.
