Understand this calculator

What it does

Lays out your 120-year Vimshottari timeline: the sequence of planetary periods (mahadasha), their sub-periods (antardasha) and sub-sub-periods (pratyantardasha), with exact dates and the one you are in today.

Why it matters

The dasha is how the tradition spreads a chart across time. It is the most-used timing system in Nepal and India.

How it is worked out

  1. Find the Moon's nakshatra at birth and its ruling planet.
  2. Work out how much of that nakshatra the Moon had left, which gives the balance of the first period.
  3. Follow the fixed planetary order and years: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 (120 years).
  4. Each period is split into nine sub-periods in the same order, in proportion to the planets' years. The year length is 365.25 days.

How to read your result

  • The coloured timeline: each bar is a mahadasha, long bars for long periods. The marker shows today. Click a bar to open its antardashas.
  • 'Current' lists today's mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha.
  • Balance at birth: how much of the first period was left.

What it cannot tell you

The dates depend on the exact Moon position, so the birth time matters; a few hours changes the dates by many months. Planets' period qualities are traditional symbolism, not forecasts.
