What it does

Finds your birth nakshatra: the one of 27 lunar stations the Moon was in when you were born, with its pada, ruling planet, deity and traditional naming syllable.

Why it matters

The janma nakshatra is the start of your timeline and the source of the traditional first syllable of a name. It also gives the finest-grained label of your Moon.

How it is worked out

  1. The Moon's sidereal longitude is computed for your birth moment.
  2. Nakshatra number = longitude ÷ 13°20′, rounded up; pada = the quarter (3°20′) within it.
  3. Its ruler, deity and syllable come from the engine's reference tables.

How to read your result

  • Nakshatra and pada: your birth star and quarter.
  • Ruling planet: also the planet whose dasha you start in.
  • 'Certain' says whether the Moon could have been in a different nakshatra within your possible birth-time window.

What it cannot tell you

The Moon moves about 13° a day, so with an uncertain birth time the nakshatra can change. The tool tells you when it cannot be sure.
