About this festival

Men of the Brahmin and Chhetri communities change their janai (sacred thread); priests tie a yellow protective thread (raksha) on others' wrists. In parts of India and the Terai, sisters tie a rakhi on their brothers. Families eat kwati, a soup of nine sprouted beans.
