About this festival
Maghe Sankranti marks the traditional start of Uttarayana, when the Sun turns north. People bathe at river confluences (such as Devghat, Sankhu and Triveni) and eat til laddu, ghee and yam. The same turning point is celebrated as Pongal, Lohri and Makar Sankranti elsewhere.
How it is observed: Take a dip in a river at dawn, eat sesame sweets and root vegetables, and give to the needy.
How the date is decided
The solar day the Sun crosses into sidereal Makara (about 14–15 January).
The dates below always come from the calendar engine, never typed by hand.
