Long before clocks, the sky was the calendar. The Moon told people the month; the Sun told them the season; the stars told them when to plant, travel or hold a ceremony.
Jyotisha, 'the science of light', grew from that. It has two halves: calculation, which is astronomy and can be checked, and interpretation, which is a tradition of meaning. This site keeps them apart so you always know which one you are reading.
